Text message opt-in

Last updated: October 16, 2026

Kuro (Independent Learners, LLC) is software that independent learning centers use to run their programs and talk with the families they serve. A center can send text messages to the parents and guardians of its enrolled students through Kuro. This page shows exactly how a parent opts in, what they are shown, and what they receive.

Texting is optional. Every message type is off until the parent turns it on. Texting is never a condition of enrollment, account creation, purchase or any service: a parent who leaves every box unchecked finishes enrollment and uses the Parent Portal with no texts.

1. Where a parent opts in

There are two places, and both show the same disclosure next to the opt-in control.

(a) Parent Orientation enrollment form

Filled in at the center or from a link the center emails. The form has a separate section titled "Text messages (optional)":

Leaving every box unchecked lets the parent press Next and finish the form with nothing else needed. No texts are sent.

Text messages (optional)

Texts are optional. Leave every box unchecked if you do not want texts; you can still finish this form.

By checking one or more boxes above, you agree to receive text messages from [Center Name] about the types you check, and messages from center staff about your child. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out at any time; you can change this in the Parent Portal.

(b) Kuro Parent Portal

At sign-up, and later under Account → Text notifications, every message type is a separate switch. For an account with no saved text consent, every switch starts OFF. Choices the parent already saved during Parent Orientation carry into the account and appear on after the account is activated. The same disclosure and the Terms and Privacy Policy links are shown directly under the switches. Turning on a new type requires the parent to save; the parent can turn any type off again at any time.

2. The disclosure, word for word

Shown next to the checkboxes and the switches, with the center's own name in place of [Center Name]:

By turning on text notifications, you agree to receive recurring automated text messages from [Center Name] via Kuro at the mobile number on your account. Consent is not a condition of enrollment or purchase. Message frequency varies (pickup and check-in alerts per visit, a monthly progress summary, Level Up and certificate messages when your child earns one, occasional announcements). Msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to cancel at any time.

When a parent opts in we record the time, the mobile number, the message types, the disclosure version and its exact text, where the opt-in happened, and the IP address and browser.

3. What the parent receives

One-time confirmation, sent once per mobile number after its first effective opt-in
Kuro - [Center Name]: You're signed up for text alerts about your child (pickup, check-in/out, progress, Level Up, center news, as you chose). Msg frequency varies. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to cancel.
