This Privacy Policy describes how Independent Learners, LLC, d/b/a Kuro ("Kuro," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information in connection with the Kuro platform, websites, applications, and related services (collectively, the "Services"). Kuro provides software that learning centers ("Centers") use to manage their programs and communicate with the families they serve. By using the Services, you agree to this Policy.
1. Our role
For information that a Center provides or generates about its students and families, the Center directs how that information is used, and Kuro acts as the Center's service provider/processor, handling the information on the Center's behalf and under its instructions and authorization. For information about Center staff, website visitors, and our own business operations, Kuro acts as the controller.
2. Information we collect
Information Centers and staff provide
Account and business details (Center name, address, staff names, email addresses, phone numbers, login credentials, billing information).
Configuration, content, and records staff create in the Services.
Information about families and students
Parent/guardian contact details (name, mobile number, email, mailing address).
Student information provided by the Center to operate its program (for example name, grade, subject, enrollment, attendance, assignments, scores, and academic progress).
Communications sent or received through the Services (text/SMS/MMS, email, and in-app messages), including content and delivery information.
Consent records, such as the forms a parent or guardian signs for the Center and when they were signed.
Face check-in (biometric) data, only where a Center uses face check-in and a parent or guardian has agreed: an encrypted mathematical template derived from the student's face. No photograph or video is stored. See section 7.
Information collected automatically
Usage, log, and device data (IP address, browser/device type, pages and features used, timestamps, diagnostics).
Cookies and similar technologies used to operate, secure, remember preferences for, and analyze the Services.
3. How we use information
We use information to operate, provide, secure, support, analyze, improve, and develop the Services and our products, and specifically to:
Deliver the features Centers use, including scheduling, check-in, records, payments, and parent communications;
Send account, transactional, scheduling, and notification messages on a Center's behalf;
Monitor, secure, troubleshoot, and improve performance and reliability;
Develop new features, products, and services, and conduct research and analytics;
Provide customer support and communicate with Centers and staff;
Detect, prevent, and address fraud, abuse, security, and technical issues; and
Comply with law and enforce our agreements.
Face check-in data is the exception. It is used only to check a student in and out at their Center, and none of the other uses in this section — including improving or developing the Services or our products, research, and analytics — apply to it. See section 7.
Aggregated and de-identified data. We may create aggregated, anonymized, and de-identified data from information processed through the Services, and we may use, retain, and disclose that data for any lawful business purpose, including operating, improving, and developing our products, benchmarking, analytics, and research. This data does not identify any individual and is not treated as personal information. Face check-in data is never used to create aggregated, anonymized, or de-identified data.
4. Text (SMS/MMS) messaging
Centers use the Services to send text messages to parents and guardians who opt in — for example in the "Text notifications" settings of the Kuro parent portal. Messages are sent by the Center via Kuro and may include pickup-ready alerts, check-in and check-out notices, a monthly progress summary, announcements and closures, and replies to messages you send the Center.
Consent. Texts are sent only to mobile numbers whose owner has opted in. Consent is not a condition of enrollment or purchase. We keep a record of each opt-in and opt-out: when it happened, which message types, the mobile number, and the disclosure that was shown.
Frequency. Message frequency varies: alerts are sent per visit, a progress summary monthly, and announcements occasionally.
Cost. Message and data rates may apply.
Opting out and help. Reply STOP to any message to cancel; you will receive one confirmation and no further texts. Reply START to resume. Reply HELP for help, or contact your Center or kuro.solutions.llc@gmail.com. You can also turn individual message types off in the parent portal at any time.
Carriers. Mobile carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
Mobile information is never shared for marketing. No mobile information — including a phone number and text-messaging opt-in and consent — will be shared with, sold, or rented to third parties or affiliates for their own marketing or promotional purposes. Text-messaging originator opt-in data and consent are not shared with any third parties.
5. How we share information
We share information:
With the Center a family is enrolled with, and its authorized staff.
With service providers and subprocessors that help us operate the Services (for example hosting, communications/telecom carriers, payment processing, and analytics), under contracts that limit their use of the information to providing services to us.
For legal and safety reasons, to comply with law, respond to lawful requests, protect rights and safety, and enforce our terms.
In a business transfer, such as a merger, financing, acquisition, or sale of assets.
We do not sell personal information for money. As stated above, mobile opt-in data and consent are excluded from all sharing.
6. Student and children's information
Student information is collected and used on behalf of, and under the authorization of, the Center to provide the Services. We do not use student information to build advertising profiles or for behavioral advertising, and we do not sell it. Parents and guardians may exercise choices regarding a student's information by contacting the Center.
7. Face check-in (biometric) data
Some Centers offer face check-in, which lets a student check in and out by camera instead of scanning a card. It is optional, and a Center uses it for a student only with a parent's or guardian's consent.
What is kept. When Center staff register a student, the camera measures the student's face from a few angles and turns each into a short mathematical summary (a face template). No photograph or video is stored; each picture is discarded as soon as it has been measured.
How it is protected. Templates are encrypted on the Center's device before they are sent to us and are stored encrypted. They can be read back only on a Center device by a signed-in member of that Center's staff.
How it is used. Only to check that student in and out at their Center. Face check-in data is never sold, rented, or shared with third parties; never used for advertising; never used to train or improve artificial intelligence models; and never used to develop or improve our products. It is excluded from the aggregated and de-identified data described in section 3 and from the license described in section 3 of our Terms & Conditions.
Consent. Before saving a registration, Center staff must confirm that the parent or guardian agreed. Kuro records that staff attestation. A Center can also require a current signed face check-in consent form before Kuro will save a registration. Parents and guardians may decline; the student simply checks in with their card.
Retention and deletion. Once a registration reaches the age limit the Center has set, or the student is no longer active at that Center, Kuro withholds the template from face matching. It remains encrypted so a returning student does not have to register again. A parent or guardian may ask the Center to remove a registration at any time; removing it permanently deletes the stored template.
8. Artificial intelligence features
Some features of the Services use generative artificial intelligence (AI) models — for example, to help Center staff draft a message to a family or summarize a student's progress. Before any information is sent to those models, student and parent/guardian names are replaced, so the model does not receive them. Information processed by these features is not used to train the models. Face check-in data is never sent to or processed by these generative AI features.
9. Data retention and security
We retain information for as long as needed to provide the Services, operate our business, and meet legal, tax, and accounting obligations, and we may retain aggregated or de-identified data indefinitely. Face check-in data is retained only as described in section 7. We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information; no method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
10. Your choices and rights
You can opt out of texts at any time by replying STOP. Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict certain personal information, or to appeal a decision. Families should direct such requests to their Center; Centers and staff may contact us at kuro.solutions.llc@gmail.com. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
11. Cookies
We use cookies and similar technologies to run the Services, keep them secure, remember settings, and understand usage. You can control cookies through your browser; some features may not work without them.
12. International
The Services are operated in the United States and are intended for use there. If you access them from elsewhere, you consent to processing information in the United States.
13. Changes
We may update this Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date reflects the latest version; material changes will be indicated by updating that date.
14. Affiliate links to Amazon
Parts of the Services show "Buy" links to Amazon.com — for example in the Library feature's recommended-reading lists. When an Amazon Associates tag is configured, those links carry the tag and a qualifying purchase may earn a referral commission. When no tag is configured, the links are untagged and no commission is earned. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases; see section 14 of our Terms & Conditions for the full disclosure.
What this means for your information: we do not send Amazon any personal information about you, and we do not receive from Amazon any information identifying who clicked a link or what they bought. Amazon reports commissions to the operator of this installation only in aggregate.
Following one of these links takes you to Amazon.com. Amazon is a separate company that we do not operate or control, and once you arrive there Amazon's own privacy notice and cookie practices apply, not this Policy. Amazon may set its own cookies and record the referral in order to attribute the purchase. If you would rather not be tracked that way, you can search for the book on Amazon directly instead of using the Buy link.
